NEWCASTLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Newcastle Historical Society was recently set up with the aim to promote and remember past events in our community. One of the first projects is to commemorate the soldiers from Newcastle and surrounds who died in the Great War 1914-1918. We have established that John Dunne, John Mansfield, John Forbes and John Hickey as being from the Newcastle area, but we need help to authenticate whether John Hickey is from Newcastle. The following is the information we have on John Crotty: he is on the 1901 census aged 14 from Middlequater living with his mother Catherine; he is also on the 1911 census aged 24. A John Crotty enlisted in Cahir, he was born in Cahir and living in Ballymacarbery when he enlisted. He joined the Royal Irish Regiment, Unit 6th Battalion, and Service no. 11263. He was killed in action on June 7, 1917, at the age of 30. His grave/memorial reference is B12 cemetery, Irish House Cemetery Belgium. We believe that he may be the same person, if anyone would be able to shed some light on this we would love to hear from you. Contact Aisling Lansley 0866021875 or email email@example.com
