Ballyneale FC defeated Peake Villa from Thurles by five goals to two in a league game at their home grounds in Ballydine on Sunday. This was a game Ballyneale had to win if it was to reach the final stages of the competition.
While the game finished 5-2 in Ballyneale’s favour, it was far from a one-sided game.
Ballyneale started well and broke the deadlock when Robbie O’Brien got a touch from a Tom Kennedy delivery. And with the Peake Villa goalkeeper committed, the ball slipped into the empty net.
Peake Villa soon got the equailiser with a unstoppable shot just inside the box.
However, Ballyneale reacted positively to the set back.
Robbie O’Brien gained possession in the Peake Villa box and curled a brilliant finish to the top corner of the net.
The score at half time was 2-1.
Shortly after the second half began, Peak Villa stunned Ballyneale by scoring a second goal.
But again the Ballyneale players regrouped and went ahead thanks to a header from Darren McCarthy from a corner kick.
The game was still finely balanced with Peake Villa looking very capable of scoring at any time. The move and goal of the game began with Ballyneale’s defenders. Enda Fogarty swept the ball from right to left to Tom Kennedy, with Tom repaying the compliment with an inch perfect cross back to Enda, who powered home with a header.
Marty O’Reilly finished off the game with a well taken goal.
