Congratulations to Aidan Sweeney, son of the late Tommy and Rita Sweeney, Middlequarter, and Alice, daughter of James and Tilly Kearney, Kilmanahan, who were married in Newcastle on Friday. Celebrating the nuptials was Fr Connie Kelleher P.P Touraneena and Fr Gareth Desmond P.P Newcastle. We wish Aidan and Alice many years of health and happiness in their home in Australia.
MY CANINE COMPANION
A sale of work in aid of “My Canine Companion” Autism services S.T. Branch will be held in the Community Hall Newcastle on Saturday, May 11, from 1pm to 3pm. Toys, books, clothes, cakes etc. will be gratefully accepted. Meet the dogs who help many people. A talk on the benefits that many people get from them will be given in the local school on Friday, May 10. Items can be given to Trish Aherne or contact Wendy 0877433110.
A function was held in the Community Hall on Saturday, May 4, to celebrate the All-Ireland Scór title won by Sinéad Grant. Club chairman, Michael Keating congratulated Sinéad and presented her with a piece of crystal from the club to mark the occasion. The speakers also congratulated Noel Joyce and members of the JK Brackens set dancers, who also won All-Ireland titles in recitation and Rince Seit. Also present were members of the Newport Ballad Group who were All-Ireland finalists. There was reminiscing about Derry 2013 and 3 All-Ireland Scór titles. As Séan Nugent put it, it’s only May and the county has 3 All-Irelands. Let’s hope there’s more to come on the playing fields.
GAA JIGS N REELS
The club’s first jigs n reels competition will be held in Cahir House Hotel on Saturday, May 11, at 8.30pm. GAA players and personalities have been in training in recent weeks along with the girls of the Céilí Club. Tickets €10 in both shops in the village, from GAA committee members or can be bought at the door on the night.
Junior A Football - The footballers were due to get the defence of their south title under way on Saturday, May 11, against Carrick Davins. However, it is now unlikely that the game will go ahead.
Juvenile GAA - The u14 footballers received a walk over from Mullinahone on Thursday collecting 2 points towards their league position. The u12s travelled to Ballylooby on Friday. After a great performance Newcastle emerged victorious 1-8 to 1-3.
