Rathgormack FG Cllr Cllr Mary Greene has announced she will retire from local politics after 15 years of public service when Waterford Co. Council’s current term ends next May.

Cllr Greene, who teaches at Carrick-on-Suir’s Scoil Mhuire Secondary School, said it had been a great honour to be elected by her community and to represent their interests. But she found political life had become “overwhelmingly bitter and divisive” since she first entered politics and she no longer had the “enthusiasm and will for the confrontation required to continue”.

She said she personally found the 2009 election campaign in 2009 to be a “horrendous experience” and decided after it not to run for election again. Unfortunately, nothing had changed since to affect her decision

Her full-time work as a teacher and wish to spend optimum time with her young daughter were other influencing factors. She thanked her Comeragh Electoral Area colleagues, with whom she had an excellent working relationship, and Council staff for their support.
