Congratulations to Brother Joseph (Larry) Ryan, formerly of Thurles Rd., Ballydavid, Littleton, who was ordained to the priesthood in Mellifort Abbey, Collow, Co Louth on January 29. He is a son of Margaret and the late Larry; he is from a family of nine and a nephew of the famous Ryan hurling family of Ballybeg. After his school days in Thurles, he worked in Kenehans Steel, Mitchel Street, Thurles, O’ Dwyer’s Steel, Dundrum, Thurles Sugar Factory and Collins Steplejacks. He spent four years working in Africa and then joined the Cistercian Community in Mellifort and took his vows as Brother Joseph. He was ordained to the deaconate at Mellifort in November 2011 by Cardinal Sean Brady and on Sunday, January 29, Fr. Ryan was ordained by Bishop Gerard Clifford, Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh. The attendance included family and friends and fathers aunt Nora who lives in Maunvaun, Cappawhite with her husband Danny, Nora Ryan loves Mellifort and spends a lot of time there at retreats etc. Fr. Joseph’s ordaination was celebrated with much joy in the Parish; congratulations are extended to him and his family.

Are launching their “Walk on Wednesday” campaign on Wednesday, February 22. As part of the school’s fourth Green flag programme, all pupils and parents will be encouraged to walk to school each Wednesday from now on. The campaign will be launched in The Square, Cappawhite at 9.15 a.m by John Hayes, former Munster and Ireland rugby player. All 90 pupils, accompanied by parents and family members, will then walk to school. Following this, Board of Management Chairperson, Anne McGrath, will unveil the school’s latest achievement, a plaque which awards Cappawhite N.S. Digital School status. All are invited to the school on this day ,where a fundraising breakfast will then be served from 9.45 a.m to 11 a.m. Donations for this breakfast will be in aid of school funds and the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.
