BALLYBACON/GRANGE GAA CLUB
Congratulations to Morgan Lambert on earning the Under 10 player of the week in Goatenbridge last Tuesday evening. Morgan has many good hurling skills, including being able to strike while on the run. He is also determined and knows when he gets the ball in his hand to sprint into space before giving a good handpass or striking the sliotar hard. Well done also to all the Under 10 players who hurled so well in Clerihan on Saturday morning last. They beat Clonmel Óg, Cahir and finally Clerihan. Players such as Eoin Wyse, Andrew Browne, Aaron Poliunas, Cian O’Mahoney, Seán Reidy and Morgan Lambert hurled a lot of ball and hurled it very well. Two 65’s put over by Aaron at important stages in games stood out. Also doing very nicely on the day were Seán Cunningham, Kevin Burke, Ben Doyle, Tadgh Carroll, Eoin Keane, Molly Butler and Liam Burke.
We have at least two more official blitzes as well as one we’ll organise in Goatenbridge over the summer so lots to look forward to, lots to prepare for. One extra, important point: players need to hurl every day to build up striking skills, strong wrists, catching skills, etc. Hurling homework!
Congratulations to the winning team in the very exciting inaugural Willie Condon Cup tournament held recently. Mixed teams of pupils from Ardfinnan and Grange schools had a great afternoon’s hurling. Captain James Condon was thrilled and gave a fine speech thanking Martin Doyle for reffing, Paddy Noonan for preparing the pitch and the Condon family for giving the chance to play this tournament. Willie’s son, Paul spoke very well before presenting the cup to James and soon after presenting the Man of the Match Award to a delighted Darragh O’Brien. On the winning team was Connor Gallagher, a grandson of Willie’s who played very well and captain of the runners up team was whole-hearted hurler and nephew of the late Willie, John Condon.
We played in Kilsheelan on Friday night against Kilsheelan/Kilcash in the first round game. This was a very good game of hurling with Kilsheelan running out victors in end on a score of two goals and nine points to one goal and eight points. Our young team competed very well which augers well for future games.
We have two matches in this Championship this week. On Monday night we travelled to Carrick to take on Swans and on Thursday night we take on Mullinahone in Goatenbridge. We started this championship on a winning note last week when we defeated Skeheenarinky in the first round in Ballyporeen.
We played Cahir in Ballylooby last Thursday night in the first round of the Minor Championship. Conditions were very bad for both teams on night. We competed well all through against a strong Cahir team but luck was not with us with Cahir winning this particular game.
Our Intermediate team were in action on Saturday evening last in Cahir against Fr Sheehy’s in the Championship. We started slowly with Andrew Heffernan opening our account with a point. After about 10 minutes we were ahead by a single point on a score of three points to two. Both teams enjoyed good periods of possession but scores were hard to come by with many chances missed by both teams throughout. We improved in the second quarter and scored the only goal of the game when Heffernan finished a breaking ball to net to put us ahead one goal and six points to three points for Fr Sheehy’s.
Our captain Peter Hally operating at centre forward showed the way forward hitting two good points before the break to leave the half time score at one goal and eleven points to three points. The second half was more competitive all through with little between the teams in scoring power. Peter Hally hit a further three points from play along with points from Daniel O’Regan, Alan O’Gorman, Aiden Savage, Eoin Walsh and a pointed free from Johnny English. We outscored Fr Sheehy’s by one point in the second half to run out winners in a final score of one goal and nineteen points to ten points.
We thank all who took part in our Annual Golf Classic on Friday last in Cahir Park and congratulate all our winners on the day. Thanks to our sponsors.
