On the national front the O’Donnell family, legends of the greyhound game, enjoyed a memorable evening in Shelbourne Park where the final of the Ladbroke Greyhound Derby, the Blue Riband of Irish greyhound racing, was won in most exciting fashion by the 2/1 favourite Skywalker Puma, trained by Matt and Frances O’Donnell.

Skywalker Puma got up near the line to defeat Cuil Cougar trained by Dolores Ruth, a sister of Frances O’Donnell, by a neck in a thrilling contest to take the 120,000 euro winner’s prize for Devon owner Ray Patterson.

At local level approximately ninety minutes earlier in Kilsheelan, the Clonmel Oil South Tipperary Senior Football championship decider proved equally exciting as Killenaule, appearing in the final for the very first time, sensationally defeated the eleven times champions Moyle Rovers by two points.

A highlight of their history making win was a five star performance from their goalkeeper Matthew O’Donnell, a member of the famous greyhound family who gained his moment of glory in a different field as his family celebrated on the National stage.
