As a mark of respect following the passing of local councillor, Michael Anglim, Goatenbridge/Ballybacon Development Association postponed our General Knowledge Table Quiz which was to be held in the Glenview Lounge, Goatenbridge on Friday, January 25. It will now take place this Friday, February 1, at 9pm. Monies raised will go towards various projects in the Goatenbridge and Ballybacon Areas in 2013 such as flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, we will be able to provide petrol etc for cutting of grass and for the general upkeep of the area. Cllr Seanie Lonergan will be the quizmaster on the night. Your support would be much appreciated.

We will also be presented with our new defibrillator from Cllr Lonergan so we would appreciate if as many from our community and surrounds could come along and support our endeavour. There will also be a raffle and refreshments will be served!

Training session with Tommy Walsh: Sean Og Coughlan, one of our young players entered a competition being run by John Kennedy Motors recently. In 20 words or less he had to say why he felt his club should be represented by a Toyota rep. Sean Óg won a training session for his club with none other than one and only Tommy Walsh! This training session will take place in Goatenbridge on Saturday, February 9, at 10am. This session is for all our juvenile players from under U6s up. Congratulations Sean Óg!

We are currently in discussions with a communications company in relation to the text alert initiative to roll it out as soon as possible. BeAlertSMS in association with Muintir na Tire offers the Gardai and Community Alert the ability to send out group texts when a current event is happening. No one person in the Community Alert need be responsible for retaining numbers or names or be available to send out group texts. The benefits of this system include; a reduction in crime, the community feels safer, increased communication amongst local residents, better relations between An Garda Siochana and the community, increased communication between An Garda Siochana and the community, Gardai are now able to get information to the community instantly and Gardai can canvass hundreds of subscribers in an instant should they require information. If a member of the Community Alert sees any suspicious activity they can report the same to their local Garda station, and they (the Gardai) then can contact Be Alert to confirm the activity and request the group text to be sent out. The group text will be sent out ASAP normally within 3-5 minutes. As soon as the initiative is up and running, each subscriber will be informed. Thank you to all the households who have signed up to date and should you wish to subscribe, please contact any committee member.

Anyone who is interested in training in the use of our new defibrillator should forward their name and number to Martin Lonergan at 0876497083 as soon as possible so that training can be arranged. All are welcome.

It was with a sense of sadness that we learned on Wednesday last of the death of Michael Anglim, MCC, Ballylaffin, Ardfinnan. Michael had served on South Tipperary County Council representing the Cahir Electoral Area for Fianna Fáil since 1991. Members of our Cumann took part in a Guard of Honour at Michael’s removal on Thursday night, January 24, to Duhill Church. They were joined by members of Fianna Fáil from across South Tipperary in a final mark of respect for a great man and gentleman. Burial took place after 12 noon Mass in Duhill on Friday, January 25. The Cumann and the people of Goatenbridge/Ballybacon extend our sincerest sympathies to Michael’s loving wife Bridie, son Micheál, daughters Mary, Joan, Rosaleen and Valerie, grandchildren, sons-in-law, brothers-in-law, relatives and friends.

Lauren O’Leary would like to thank all those who supported her in her recent table quiz and all those who sponsored prizes. The night was a great success with 33 tables taking part. A special thanks to Diarmuid Boyle and Ger Meagher for their help. Also a huge thank you to PJ and Lee Cullinane quiz masters on the night.
