The 89th Liam Lynch Memorial Mass will take place on Sunday next, April 15. The schedule will begin at 2pm at Tigh na nDaoine with the ceremonial raising of the tricolour, to be followed by Mass in Newcastle Church at 2.30pm. After Mass, refreshments will be served in the Community Hall followed by an Oration which will be delivered by Senator Mark Daly.


Pupils at Newcastle School are going to produce a local history booklet over the next few months. If anyone has any stories or pieces of local history, they would like to include in the booklet please ring 087 2405061 as soon as possible.


On Good Friday night Muintir na Tire staged a very successful ‘45’ card drive which was held in the Community Hall in aid of the Lourdes Fund. Together with the support from the local parishioners, we had a very good attendance from outside the area, which was very much appreciated. Our thanks also to the many individuals who donated to the Fund, to O’Dwyers Foodstore who supplied the refreshments and to the ladies for the lovely appetising cakes etc. Two parishioners will be going to Lourdes this year.


Newcastle Muintir na Tire Community Council are delighted to confirm that our Sponsored Cycle is taking place on Sunday, April 22, at 10 a.m. All monies raised to towards the Lourdes Fund.

We are looking for volunteers (adults only) to take a sponsorship card and help those who are cycling to raise funds. Please contact Marian O’Dwyer on 087-1254882 or Joanie in O’Dwyers Shop immediately.

Entry is allowed on the day of the cycle with a registration fee of €E20. Registration will take place in the Community Hall between 9am and 9.45am. The route for the cycle is starting in Newcastle, on to Ardfinnan, Clogheen, Goatenbridge and back to Newcastle, approx. 30 Kilometres. There will be refreshments upon completion of the cycle in the Community Hall.

We are also seeking your help in stewarding the event on the day. If you are willing to help in any way please contact Marian or Joanie. Your participation and support will be much appreciated.


The Community Council are delighted to announce that in association with Philip Maher of the Fishhunt, Touraneena, Ballinamult, a day long Introduction and Instruction on Angling for the youth of the Newcastle Area will be held on Sunday, May 27.

To qualify, you must be 18 years or under and feel you may have an interest in angling. Those who wish to participate must register by April 30 by giving your name to Joan O’Dwyer at O Dwyer’s shop 6136555 or by contacting Marian O’Dwyer on 087 1254882. Please note that only those who register on or before April 30 can participate in the training day.

Qualified Instructors will be available to guide you through the finer points of angling and all equipment required will be provided on the day. Please note that the instruction and equipment are available free to participants.

AGM for Newcastle Community Youth and Resource Group will take place in Tigh na nDaoine at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11. All are welcome to attend.


Arts and Crafts for adults will run on Thursday’s from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm in Tigh na nDaoine starting on April 12. Classes will start with card making and calligraphy. If you would be interested please contact Mandy on 087 1846393.

Road Hurling:

The GAA Club are holding a Road Hurling competition on the May Bank Holiday Monday, May 7. Entry fee for a team of three players will be €E30 and the aim of the competition is to cover the course with two sliothers in the shortest number of strokes. A third sliother can be bought for €E10 if the others are lost. Registration of teams will take place at the GAA Complex on May 7 at 12 noon. Under 18’s can take part at a cost of €E5 but there must be one player over 18 years of age on each team and the route and all rules and regulations will available at the registration on the day. We would encourage as many people as possible to come out and take part in what should be a very entertaining event. Get practising.

Medal Presentation:

On Wednesday night, April 4th, at the committee meeting, the medals of the Late Johnny Lonergan, Ruan, were presented to the Club. Johnny’s sister, Alice O,Shea and Tommy Hally made the presentation of the Medals to the Club President, Mickey Nugent. Johnny, who was a player, officer and lifelong supporter of the Club, wished that his medals would be presented to the Club. A total of 16 medals were presented, including the All Ireland medal Johnny won with the Post Office. The club are very grateful to all involved in the presentation and it is lovely that the medals are a permanent part of the Club.


Congratulations to David Power, manager of the Tipperary All Ireland Minor Football Champions on receiving the Tipperary Association in Dublin, Person of the Year. This presentation will take place in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Dublin on Saturday April 28. Anyone interested in travelling to this event to represent the Club should contact any of the officers of the Club.

Committee Meeting - The next committee meeting will be held on Wednesday night, April 25, in the Club Rooms at 8.30p.m. Please note the change of date. All committee members are requested to attend.


South Tipperary County Council would like to invite residents along to its Pet Awareness Day. Taking place on Thursday, April 12, from 12.45pm at the Newcastle Community House. The County Vet, Dog Warden and Community Liaison Officer will all be available to answer questions and give out information packs on responsible pet ownership. As animal lovers we all care about the welfare of our pets and this Pet Awareness Initiative provides the opportunity to meet with professionals in the field in an advisory capacity and discuss your pets welfare free of charge.
