The gentle passing of Patrick (Paddy) Dawson on July 31, 2013 at aged 85, was a huge loss to the community of Cullen Lattin and surrounding areas.
Paddy was born on July 15, 1928, and was the eldest of a nine; Katie, Peggy, Mary, Eileen, Breda and Josephine, Sean and Michael. He became a member of Óglaigh Náisiúnta Na hÉireann (Organisation of National Ex-Service men and women) before leaving Ireland in 1951 to work in England.
He returned to Cullen in 1977 and bought a pub that he opened in 1978.
“Paddy would sit by the fire and welcome people coming in. Now I look down there and feel lonesome,” said Marie Nash, Paddy’s first cousin who took over the reigns of the bar in 2006. “He was great company, a good listener and he had a warm heart.”In the 1990’s Paddy led the way transforming Cullen graveyard . A committee was formed and many awards and plaques adorn the walls of the pub from their achievements from Tidy Graveyard competitions. Paddy was a unique gentleman who is sorely missed in his community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
