On Wednesday, July 31, the parish of Newcastle /Fourmilewater celebrated the silver jubilee of the ordination of their much loved parish priest, Very Rev Fr Garrett Desmond.

The special occasion was marked with a concelebrated mass in Newcastle featuring the chief celebrant Fr Desmond assisted by many of his priests, colleagues, and rev Brian McCarty (retired).

Fr Desmond is a past pupil of Kilrossanty NS and celebrated his first mass in Kilrossanty 25 years ago. Newcastle church was filled to capacity with family members, friends, parishioners, including visitors from many parishes he had ministered. The Newcastle and Fourmilewater choirs, with musicians John and Mary, rendered many of Fr Garrett’s favourite hymns. Following mass a presentation on behalf of the parishioners was made to Fr Desmond by Richard Power, after which all present adjourned to the community hall where refreshments were laid on in abundance including the silver jubliee cake. A presentation on behalf of Muintir na Tire, was made to Fr Garrett by chairperson Marian Dwyer. Fr Desmond thanked all who sent mass bouquets cards and good wishes and we wish many more years in the parish.
