Cashel Community school had an historic win in the Munster First Year Camogie Blitz played in Mallow on Wednesday last, April 18. The girls did their school proud taking home the trophy after four excellent matches in which they played with great spirit.
The facilities in Mallow were top-class and really allowed the girls show all their skills.
In the first game the CCS team played one of the home teams from Mallow and, after a titanic struggle and star performances all over the field, they emerged with a narrow victory.
On to the second game then where they played St Annes. Here again the team showed great resilience and got some great scores with Stacey Farrell and Emma McLoughlin outstanding.
The semi-final took place against Glanmire C.S. With the benefit of two very competitive games behind them,CCS were far superior and had the game won long before the final whistle. Orla O’Dwyer and Katie Rafferty were very impressive.
In the final Cashel went in as underdogs against St Marys of Mallow who had easily won all their games in the other section. Cashel had their backs to the wall from the very start and only for some stout defending by the likes of Laura Connolly, Aoife Gahan and Aoife Crosse, St Marys could have been out of sight. Gradually Cashel began to get on top and Leah Price, Maria Magner and Stacey Farrell hit some great scores and a fine goal from Roisin Maher sealed a great victory for the Cashel girls on a scoreline of 3-05 0-01.
Great credit is due to all the girls who really showed heart and determination.
They have trained three days a week in all sorts of conditions since last September. Accolades too must go to their two coaches Ms Gleeson and Ms Connolly for their commitment during thepat eight months; understandably, they were hoarse by the end of the blitz!.
