The Juvenile Commitee held a very successful Open Week recently.
Prize giving was held in the nissen hut on Thursday last, April 5. The weather was kind to all the players, with the rain holding off, despite the cold.
The juvenile committee worked hard to make the Open Week a success. To those who helped man the shop, provide the lovely home baking, it was much appreciated. A special word of thanks to Jill O’Connor, who began the coaching for the present U18’s an held the position as Coaching Co-ordinator . Thanks to Jill, the club now has two coaches, Tony McCarthy and Sinead Dunne who have brought the standard of tennis in the club to where it is today. Jill has now stepped down and Margo Fogarty has taken over as the new coaching co-ordinator. Not an easy task so it is hoped that all parents will co-operate with her and we wish Margo well in the future.
However the bulk of the work for this competition was undertaken by Marie Gleeson and Michelle O’ Meara. This is the third year of the competition and it is thanks to their vision that we are here to enjoy such great tennis. Both were presented with bouquets of flowers as a small token in appreciation of their great work. Michelle has stepped down as chairperson, as an appreciation her Michael made a presentation on behalf of the club.
Chairperson, Sharon Perdue welcomed everyone and thanked sponsors, Hickey O’Dwyer Solicitors, Buckleys Spar, The Bakehouse, Spearmans Bakery, Elys Centra and Tommy Moloney Milk.
Clodagh Hickey O’Dwyer then proceeded to make the presentation.

In scorching heat over the weekend in the first Veteran’s Tournament in Castleview, (Carrick -on-Suir) Jerry Shanahan and Jimmy Ryan had a fantastic win against Leo Cummins and Barry Twomey in the semi-final of the over 35 men’s doubles. An exciting match with Jimmy and Jerry winning the first set in a tie break, losing the second set and winning the championship tie break with a very close 10-8 finish. They went on to lose in the final to number one seeds Willie Reynolds and Joe Smith. Ursula Ryan and Martin Ormonde the number one seeds beat Benny Dudley and Barbara Ryan in the Final of the Veteran’s Mixed Doubles.
Ursula and Barbara (Ryan and Ryan!) lost in the semi-final to the top seeded and eventual winners of the ladies doubles Julieann Foley and Geraldine Everett in a very close match.
Benny Dudley and Geraldine Everett won the over 35’s mixed doubles in a great battle and the final match of the tournament against the top ranked Julieann Foley and Barry Twomey. Not the first time that Geraldine has won a tournament partnering a Larkspur man!
