Cashel to fete King Brian Boru this weekend

One thousand years after the Battle of Clontarf Cashel will remember the local links to High King Brian Ború with a festival next weekend.

Saturday, April 26, will see Bru Ború play host to a concert featuring a family band from Tennessee, The Willis Clan, they mix their Irish Roots with country music from their home in Nashville. The group of eight brothers and sisters have featured on their own series Great American Country TV.

Sean Laffey, one of the organisers, said thanks to generous funding from the Town and County Councils “we are able to present this concert for only €12.50 per ticket. You can book a ticket by phone on 06262685”.

Also on the bill are The Voice Squad, Gerry Cullen, Phil Callery and Fran McPhail joined together to make up the group that are renowned for their harmonic traditional Irish songs. The night will also feature music from the Tipperary Gospel Choir and Irish dancing from seven time world champion, Michelle Lawrence. Local teenage act, the duo 2B, will open the night with a performance showcasing their recent recording they made with Martin Murray in Carrick on Suir, just before he went off to tour the USA with Ry Cooder. Saturday, April 26, will feature a one day historical conference at Bru Ború where the world of Brian Ború will be explained by Irish and international academics. The conference featuring nine lectures is €25 per ticket. If you are a member of a choir and would like to take part in Sing for the King, there is vocal workshop on Saturday 26th at St. John’s Cathedral from 2pm to 4pm. This costs €10 to cover material and will be hosted by the Voice Squad. Learn a number of vocal pieces that will be sung the next day at the To Crown a King Ceremony which is being planned for the Rock of Cashel. This is a re-enactment of the Coronation of Brian Ború the High King of Munster in the historic setting where he rose to power. ‘To Crown a King Coronation’ is the high point of Sunday’s free community pageant which will leave the town centre at 2pm.
