Having read the lovely obituary for John Costigan in The Nationalist I would like to add one more chapter.
John Costigan was a founder member of Cahir Credit Union in 1968/1969. That’s when I first met John. He has now joined many founder members in the next life, Pat Joe Regan, Jackie Costello, Paddy Lonergan, Jackie Moloney, Paddy Butler, Pierce Carrol, Paddy Butler, Paddy Finnerty, Billy Loughnane, Ronnie Beardmore.
John volunteered in those early years. His help and advice as an accountant was invaluable. In those years we had no computers or calculators we had to do the sums. John was a fantastic help to everybody on the Monday collection nights. Some of the wisdom he imparted to us at that time is still evident in the Credit Union in Cahir Being the humble man that he was he never accepted any officer positions he just did the hard work behind the scenes. He was greatly missed when he took a break and started to play a bit of golf which he really loved. I was able to continue my friendship with him through the golf club until his sad passing a few weeks ago. May he rest in peace. Ned Lonergan
