A function to mark the retirement of Dr Joe Coyne was organised by Muintir na Tire and held in the community hall on Tuesday, January 28.

There was a representation attendance of all sections of the community and especially those on his panel, which was an indication of his popularity.

The chairperson of Muintir na Tire welcomed everyone in a most entertaining speech. In making the presentation to Dr Coyne she thanked him sincerely for his service to the community during the past 30 years or so, she commented on his pleasant manner, and his caring attitude and wished himself and Mrs Coyne a very long and happy retirement. In reply Dr Coyne thanked everyone for what he felt would be a treasured reminder of his time in Newcastle and he very much appreciated the gift of a framed painting of the Knockmealdowns and a section of the River Suir which was produced by P.J Cullinan. Dr Coyne went on to say how he enjoyed his time in Newcastle and reminded us how fortunate we are to be residing in such a scenic part of the county. Refreshments of home baking was enjoyed by all.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Tony Rushe, Liam Lynch Terrace, and family on the recent death of his sister Josephine.
