Carrick Town Council has collected more than €502,000 in commercial rates from the town’s businesses for last year.
The Council has so far collected 78% of this tax levied on commercial properties for 2013, which is an improvement on the previous year, the Council’s monthly meeting was informed on Monday night.
The Council has 285 commercial rate accounts and can levy a warrant of €947,721 in rates from commercial properties in the town.
Town Clerk Michael O’Brien reported the Council wrote off €249,471 in commercial rates last year. The majority of write offs were made in cases of vacant commercial premises.
At the end of 2013, there were €296,374 rates arrears outstanding but a further €13,000 rates were paid over the past month.
