Build-up underway for Monkstown regatta
Rowing
Clonmel Rowing Club's next regatta is the penultimate event of the season, Monkstown regatta at the National Rowing Centre at Inniscara, Cork.
The club will have several crews and scullers taking part and a heavy training programme is currently in progress.
Several members past and present took part in the Sean Kelly Comeragh Challenge last weekend completing the 160km course in good time. The weather turned our to be very good with some showers only around Rathgormuck. Lots of food was consumed to keep the energy levels up, especially for the Mahon Falls climb.
John Cremmins who has several targets before he hits the half century next year wanted badly to tick this one off his list. With much counselling and cajoling he made it through all the climbs right through to the finish. Larry Noonan did much of the cajoling and he himself did consume vast calories to make sure he didn't get the dreaded 'hunger knock'. John Phelan who now lives in Belfast also took part and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Paul Barry (the real cyclist) blitzed us all and after 30km into the event he was gone off into the distance.
Other members who completed were Oisin McGrath who slipped and fell at the meal in the sports centre at the finish; it looked like the fall took more out of him than the actual cycle. Aonghus McGrath was also spotted before the event.
