Clonmel Commercials 1-9 Thomas MacDonaghs 0-5

A great second half display secured Clonmel Commercials’ 15th County Senior Football Championship, and their first in 10 years, when they proved too strong for Thomas MacDonaghs in Sunday’s Final at Semple Stadium.

The teams were level at 0-2 each at the end of a poor first half.

However Commercials were much the better team on the turnover. They had early points from Aldo Matassa and Ian Barnes (0-2) before man of the match Colman Kennedy pounced for the crucial score of the game in the 41st minute when he finished a flowing move from defence to send a low shot to the net.

Despite the torrential rain and darkness that necessitated the switching on of the floodlights, the second half was a much better spectacle than the first period.

Thomas MacDonaghs, led by Tipperary senior captain Philip Austin and county senior hurlers David Young and Seamus Hennessy, pressed hard in the closing stages but the North combination team couldn’t breach a solid Commercials defence and the Clonmel team were worthy winners.
