Clonoulty up tempo in second half to claim crown

West MHC 'A' Final

Clonoulty-Rossmore 2-12

Arravale Rovers 1-11

During the first half of the minor hurling championship A final between Arravale Rovers and Clonoulty-Rossmore at Dundrum on Tuesday of last week, it looked as if Arravale were going to repeat their surprise win over Clonoulty-Rossmore in the under-21 decider. Arravale were sharper, more decisive and committed and were hunting every ball with a greater eagerness than Clonoulty. There wasn't much between the sides, eight points to three in favour of Arravale, but one would have been inclined to have a bet on the outsiders.

Clonoulty returned after the interval a transformed side. They resumed quickly with an industry and tenacity that bowled over Arravale. They came out on top in all sectors, with the backs and centrefield giving a supply to their forwards and the Arravale backs put on the back foot. Two goals by the eleventh minute highlighted their takeover of the game. Only in the final ten minutes did Arravale get their hurling back on track but, with the score 2-10 to 0-9 against them at that stage, it was too little and too late to gain a victory.

The final score was 2-12 to 1-11 with the reigning champions dethroned by a fine Clonoulty side, most of whom have had sucess at the under-16 level. A significant comment on Arravale's performance was that they scored only four points from play.

Clonoulty had good performances from Sean Maher, James Ryan, Seamus Carew, Conor Hammersley and Cathal Ryan. Best for Arravale were Donagh Leahy, Paddy Dalton, Shane Leahy and David Power.

After the game Clonoulty captain, Martin Sadlier, received the O'Dwyer Cup from board chairman, Roger Kennedy.
