Commercials prove too strong as they cruise into final

County MFC 'A' semi-final

Clonmel Commercials 2-20

Inane Rovers 1-3

South champions Clonmel Commercials qualified for the County Minor 'A' Football Final proving too strong for North champions Inane Rovers in this opening game in a 'double-header' at Leahy Park, Cashel on Saturday evening.

Commercials opened strongly and were six points to the good after 15 minutes with scores from Michael Quinlivan with a brace, Shane Power also with two, Gearoid Buckley and Ian Fahey with a '45' after Inane Rovers net-minder Michael Parlon had saved a Kevin Gunne penalty.

Inane Rovers, who lost their influential captain Shane Taylor through injury, scored their first point after 16 minutes through Ethan Flynn, but the North Tipp outfit were playing second fiddle to a well tuned Commercials side that were picking off scores from all angles and were 1-9 to 0-1 after 27 minutes. Colman Kennedy, Seamus Kennedy and Kevin Gunne hit points and sandwiched in between was a well struck goal from Emmet Ryan.

Over the final two minutes of the half Inane Rovers, although outplayed for the majority of the half, rallied to put just seven points between the sides as Jack Feeney slotted over a free-kick before Feeney with another free-kick into the goalmouth saw David McNamara punch home to leave the half-time score 1-9 to 1-2.

The second-half recovery by Inane Rovers that the neutral observer had hoped for never materialised as Clonmel Commercials stamped their authority on proceedings, as the North champions, who had played the previous Wednesday in the North decider against Borris-Ileigh, ran out of steam. Points from Jason Lonergan, Colman Kennedy, Kevin Gunne and two more frees from Michael Quinlivan saw the South side lead 1-14 to 1-2 as the three-quarter stage was reached.

Inane Rovers got their only score of the second half with a point from Michael Campion at the start of the final quarter, but by then they had the proverbial mountain to climb. Over the final twelve minutes Commercials added further points from Shane Power – one from play and one from a free-kick, before impact substitute Shane Flynn scored a point with his first touch and followed that with a goal shortly afterwards. With the last kick of a very one-sided contest Levi Whelan rounded off the scoring for a Clonmel Commercials side that can expect a much tougher test against Loughmore-Castleliney whom they will face in the County Minor ‘A’ Football 2010 decider on a date and venue yet to be confirmed.
