Fullback line outstanding as Clonoulty-Rossmore crowned u-14 'A' champions
West Tipp Bord na nOg
With Tipperarys Senior Hurlers garnering all the accolades following a massive victory over Kilkenny in last Sundays All Ireland, elsewhere in West Tipp over the weekend saw the completion of this year's U14 Hurling championship with victories going to Clonoulty/Rossmore over Cashel KC in the U14A West Final, Sean Treacys with two points to spare over the Kickhams in a thrilling U14B Final while Galtee Rvs overcome Emly in an equally exciting U14C decider.
Clonoulty/Rossmore captured the John Kelly soft drinks Tipperary sponsored West U14A Hurling title in Golden on Thursday night last where they defeated Cashel KC by a five point margin, 2-12 to 3-4. The winners dominated for three-quarters of the fifty minutes but then had to endure a belated fight back by Cashel which produced three goals in a five minute spell.
As soon as the game started Clonoulty began to move with speed, sweeping the ball up the field they had the Cashel backs at sixes and sevens dominating the opening fifteen minutes with a high level of skill and accuracy.
Clonoulty centre forward David Egan had their first point and this was followed with further points by Calem Loughman and Egan again to go three points clear after six minutes. In the seventh minute James Ryan (C) finished to the net following a lovely movement involving David Egan and Dillon Quirke and within thirteen minutes had gone ten points ahead (1-7 to no score] with three from Egan and one by Quirke.
The Clonoulty pressure eased off somewhat until James Hammersley got on the score sheet with a point in the 20th minute before Cashel's James Cummins opened their scoring with a pointed free. Awarded a number of close in frees Cashel went for goals and all were cleared along with other scoring opportunities which went wide.
Thomas Caulfield ( Cashel )and Dylan Kennedy ( Clonoulty ) exchanged points to leave the latter side comfortably in front at the interval, 1-9 to 0-2.
Cashel had the breeze in the second half and opened the scoring with a Thomas Caulfield point after ten minutes before Calem Loughman replied with a Clonoulty point.
Padraig O'Donoghue pointed a Cashel free and when it looked like they might make a match of it James Hammersley finished to the net and immediately David Egan followed up with a point to leave Cashel trailing 2-11 to 0-4.
But all was not lost and after missing a number of frees a James Cummins 65 was finished to the net by Conor Devitt and two minutes later Padraig O'Donoghue cut the deficit further with a close in free going all the way to the Clonoulty net.
With time running out Padraig O'Donoghue fired home Cashel's third goal narrowing the gap to four points but Dillon Quirke had the final say with a point to leave the final score 2-12 to 3-4 in favour of Clonoulty/Rossmore.
Proving worthy winners, Clonoulty deserved their five point margin victory and with a lot of fine hurlers all over the field particularly effective was the full-back line of Adam Fryday, Aaron Ryan (C) and Gerard Mockler. Michael Ryan (W) impressed at mid-field while David Egan, James Hammersley, and Dillon Quirke were the pick of the forwards.
Apart from the last ten minutes Cashel will be disappointed with their overall performance and certainly will rue the decision to go for goals in the first half when points may have been the better option while eight wides mostly in the second half also proved costly
James Cummins did an amount of work around the field and others to impress included Thomas Caulfield, Eoin O’Dwyer, Jack Hayes and Padraig O’Donoghue.
Clonoulty/Rossmore now go on to meet Nenagh Eire Og in the County Semi Final this weekend.
