O'Brien leads by example as dominant Aherlow retain title

West SFC Final

Aherlow 1-8

Galtee Rovers 1-4

Aherlow retained the Ballinalard Transport senior football championship when they defeated Galtee Rovers by 1-8 to 1-4 in the final at Lattin on Sunday afternoon. In doing so they defeated the same opposition by the same margin as they did last year at Cappawhite. The victory qualifies them for the final stages of the county senior football championship.

Aherlow opened the scoring with a point from a free by Barry Grogan after three minutes. Galtee replied with a point from Tony Egan a minute later. Galtee weren't to score again until the 17th minute but Aherlow were much busier. Laurence Coskeren had their second point in the ninth minute and then, in a three minute spell, Aherlow added 1-2. The goal came in the 13th minute from Seamus Grogan, who received a good pass from Derry Peters and gave the goalkeeper no chance. This left the score 1-4 to 0-1 in favour of Aherlow after fourteen minutes.

Galtee came back with two points from Stephen McGrath and Declan Peters in the 17th and 20th minutes but that finished their scoring for the half. Aherlow added three points to give them a commanding 1-7 to 0-3 lead going in at the interval.

Just before half-time Shane Egan was injured in a collision with an Aherlow player. The game was held up for over six minutes before the interval. It was held up again on the resumption for about ten minutes as the referee waited for the ambulance to take the injured player away from the pitch.

There were very few scores in the second half. Aherlow added a point from John Hennessy in the 42nd minute to give them a final score of 1-8. In the 60th minute Seamus Grogan was red carded for a foul on Colin Morrissey. The referee also issued six yellow cards in the course of the game.

Galtee Rovers failed to score until the 59th minute when substitute Paul McCarthy finished a good pass from David Byron to the Aherlow net. Five minutes later, in the 64th minute, Pat Marnane added a point to give them a final score of 1-4.

Especially in the final quarter Galtee mounted numerous attacks but they came to nothing as they were broken up by the Aherlow defence or the passes went astray. The Aherlow inside backline was very effective, especially Mark O'Brien, who played a captain's part.

Overall Aherlow were the superior side with the edge over their opposites in most areas of the field. They had fine performances from Mark O'Brien, Ciaran McDonald, Cathal Dillon. Seamus Grogan and Laurence Coskeren. Best for Galtee were Pa Morrissey, Anthony Bowles, Christopher Higgins and Dennis Peters.

After the game the cup was presented to the winning captian, Mark O'Brien, by board chairman, Roger Kennedy.
