Rockwell College won Munster Ladies 7-a-side 1st. Year Football Blitz in Mallow in which 45 teams took part.

The blitz was split up into 3 sections of 15, with grading to apply following the first two games. There would be nine divisions in all.

Having defeated C.T.I. Clonmel and St. Anne’s ‘B’ of Tipperary in the preliminary stages, Rockwell were pitted against Scoil Cholm of Ballincollig in the ‘C’ semi-final. With Laura Morrissey from Brian Borus dominating midfield, ably assisted by Aoife O’Shaughnessy, they provided the springboard for Roisin Finnane and Elise O’Connor to score 5 goals between them. Ballincollig looked dangerous when they went forward but Aoife O’Donnell did sterling work in defence along with Ailish Kennedy. When introduced late in the first half, Martha Faulkner and Chloe Sweeney slotted in well, Martha scoring a spectacular goal. In the second half Roisin McCarthy came on for Elise O’Connor and scored 4 points. THe Rockwell girls eased into the final on a scoreline of 6-5 to 0-1.

They faced S.M.I. of Newcastlewest in the final and it was obvious from an early stage that they had too many guns for the Newcastlewest ladies. Once again Laura Morrissey dominated midfield and showed great understanding with Aoife O’Shaughnessy, who broke up many an attack, and ended with a tally of 1-5, while Roisin Finnane contributed 3-1. Elise O’Connor covered great ground throughout the tournament and her fitness caused problems for the opposition in each game.

Aoife O’Donovan played confidently in goal and all the subs slotted in effortlessly, never weakening the side. The final score read Rockwell 7-7 to Newcastlewest 1-1. The girls had trained twice a week over the previous two months under the guidance of Michael Doyle and Tony Smith and their slick inter-play was a tribute to their hard work.

Roisin Finnane ended with a tally of 11-3 from the four games, an excellent opportunist, Elise O’Connor (8-1), Laura Morrissey( 3-9), M. Faulkner (2-2), A. O’Donnell (1-2), R. Mc. Carthy (0-4), A. O’ Shaughnessy (0-4).
