Tiobraid Arann Abu - South's huge role in stunning All Ireland triumph

South Tipp GAA

"Tiobraid Arann Abu ! Tiobraid Arann Abu !

That's our watchword and war-cry for aye;

For Tipp'rary's brave men from the hill and the glen,

Are the champions of Ireland today."

A great South Tipperary man Tom Keating wrote those words following Tipperary's triple crown successes of 1930 and it is with an immense sense of pride that we can re-echo them following a never to be forgotten 26th All-Ireland success last Sunday. We congratulate Liam Sheedy and his wonderfully united team both on the field and off and look forward to further glory from our under 21 side next Saturday. We take special pride that the South Division has taken such a leading role in the County's success. On the field and in his after match speed Eoin Kelly was everything a captain should be, Declan Fanning was an equally inspiring Vice-Captain whilst Brendan Cummins and Paul Curran manned the goalkeeping and full-back roles in the manner of Tony Reddin and Mick Maher. Pat Kerwick and Paul Kelly also proved invaluable members of the panel. At administrative level it is a huge honour for the Division to have as Chairman and Vice-Chairman Barry O'Brien and Sean Nugent whose contributions and support for the team cannot be under-stated. On another level there were many who doubted that it would be possible to end what was a fabulous day in Croke Park without field encroachment. Those entrusted with the task of preventing this happening were led by former South and Country Chairman and present G.A.A.Trustee Con Hogan and they deserve all our thanks on a job extremely well managed and executed.

"While in victory we boast, let us now drink a toast

To the brave men, the tried and the true,

Who so oft in the past nailed our flag to the mast,

With the cry : Tiobraid Arann Abu ! "

Back at Divisional level the action is hotting up in several championships and a large fixture list over the coming week should have something for everyone.

The programme will get underway on this Wednesday evening with three games headed by the second replay of the John Quirke Jewellers junior hurling (A) quarter-final between Newcastle and Skeheenarinky. This third clash of the sides will be played in Clogheen at 6-45 p.m. and should again prove close and exciting.

Two quarter-finals in the Mulcahy Construction Junior football (B) will see Commercials face Mullinahone in Monroe and Moyle Rovers tackle Killenaule in Fethard, both games at 6-45.

On Saturday afternoon in Fethard at 3 p.m. Moyle Rovers and St. Patricks will meet in the Europlan junior hurling (B) final and a great game is expected between evenly matched teams.

Ardfinnan is expected to house the biggest attendance of the weekend in the Division on Sunday for the eagerly awaited Clonmel Credit Union Intermediate Football semi-finals. The opening game at 2 p.m. will see Mullinahone tackle Ballyporeen whilst at 3-30 Kilsheelan/Kilcash will oppose Moyle Rovers. Ballyporeen and Kilsheelan/Kilcash will carry the tag of favourites but these are likely to be closely contested tussles that could go either way.

On Sunday evening in Cahir at 6 p.m. the long awaited Clonmel Oil senior football clash of Killenaule and Moyle Rovers will be staged. Killenaule will also be in action in senior football on Wednesday evening when they play Commercials under lights in Ballyporeen at 7-30.
