Clonmel Town qualified for the John Delaney Cup semi-finals after eventually getting the better of North Tipperary District League outfit Sallypark Odrans in a tightly fought contest in Co. Offaly last Wednesday.

This game was only a couple of minutes old when an early slick Clonmel Town attack saw Shane Flynn set up Michael Quinlivan at the edge of the box and his thunderous strike gave Sallypark net-minder Damien Corcoran no chance.

The early goal seemed to rock the hosts and David McSherry almost doubled the lead, but his powerful header was brilliantly touched over the crossbar after 5 minutes.

It was all one-way traffic now and another Town attack saw Shane Flynn lose his marker down the right but Aidan Manicle somehow diverted his cross away from goal.

Twenty minutes had passed before Sallypark launched their first attack but Padraig Ryan’s shot was comfortably save by Evan Comerford. Padraig Ryan had another effort on goal 5 minutes later but his powerful free-kick cleared the crossbar.

Clonmel Town continued to create the better chances in the first half, but with David McSherry, Michael Quinlivan and Shane Flynn missing chances, it left the visitors with a slender 1-0 lead at the break.

The second half was a more even affair with Sallypark coming more into the game. After 55 minutes again it was Padraig Ryan involved, his powerful run and pass got Paddy Ronan in space but he dragged his shot wide of the target.

On 65 minutes McSherry thought he had doubled the visitors lead but his header was ruled out for offside. On 80 minutes, Sallypark almost drew level, Kieran Ryan’s pass got Brian Freeman away down the wing and his brilliant cross was inches away from being converted by the stretching Mikey Connors.

However, two minutes later the game was over as a contest. John O’Donnell was bundled over inside the penalty area and Barry Ryan converted from the penalty spot. Clonmel Town will now host Nenagh AFC in the last four this coming Wednesday.
