Tipperary soccer back with John Delaney Cup

The 2012-2013 soccer season gets underway with the John Delaney Cup, which sees the four teams from the Tipperary Southern and District League (TSDL) competing against their counterparts from the North Tipperary and District League (NTDL) this Wednesday evening, 1st August at 7.15.

This competition, the brainchild of TSDL Hon Secretary Tom Lewis to promote a closer relationship between the two leagues back in season, started in 2009/2010 and is named in honour of FAI CEO John Delaney.

St. Michael’s AFC have dominated the competition so far, winning back-to-back titles against Nenagh AFC and this season are bidding for the hat-trick.

TSDL Premier League champions St. Michael’s meet Cloughjordan FC (NTDL) and will be hoping to get this campaign off to a positive start in Cooke Park, Tipperary town.

Clonmel Celtic, who had a fantastic campaign last season, have home advantage against NTDL champions and twice beaten finalists Nenagh AFC and this looks like the game of the round.

Clonmel Town, who had one of the poorest campaigns last season since joining the TSDL, have a voyage into the unknown, facing surprise package Sallypark Odrans FC from Birr, Co. Offaly who finished third in the NTDL.

There is also an attractive opening round fixture in the Greyhound Stadium, Thurles where Cashel Town will make their debut in this competition against another debutant Thurles Town.

All players must be registered for season 2012/2013 before kicking a ball on Wednesday night.

All games, if level after 90 minutes, go directly to penalties. Up to 5 substitutes can be used.
