Answers were needed as to why the most important national monument in the country, the Rock of Cashel, had been left in such a state, Cllr. Maribel Wood stated at the monthly meeting of the local Town Council.
She said that the Rock was camouflaged behind scaffolding for some time now and they needed answers from the Minister. She had been in touch with Minister of State Martin Mansergh, who told her he was awaiting a reply from the Office of Public Works (OPW).
Mayor Eddie Bennett said that this was a big talking point in the town.
Cllr. P.J. Quinlan had stated that the canopy at the Rock was of a wide nature and didn't do anything for the monument. OPW official Michelle O'Dea had guaranteed the Council at its September meeting that an appropriate camouflaged finish, suitable for an historic site, would be provided.
Cllr. Quinlan accepted that the work had to be done and would continue for another five years.
Staff officer Mairead Ryan said the Council was awaiting a response from the OPW.
