Killenure Castle has seen the dawn of five centuries and the fortified Elizabethan house, once a ruin, dates back to the 1500s casts a striking silhouette over the Dundrum, Knockavilla landscape.
The layering of architectural styles and occupation through the years give Killenure a special quality, fully appreciated by the current owners, an artist and a designer who bought it in 2007 and have restored it and made it into a comfortable home, with a sense of adventure and fun.
Killenure hosts of another piece of history - a herd of Dexter cattle, a native small breed of cattle, originating from the Dundrum area. This breed had disappeared in Ireland until its revival in the 1970s. This herd is the base of another project that is coming from Killenure and in conjunction with the International Dundrum Dexter Gathering in August Killenure will be offering an afternoon of live music, cooking demonstrations of Dexter meat and guided tours of the grounds, with a delicious lunch featuring Killenure Dexter Beef. This event will take place on August 22. Tickets are E20 and can be obtained online www.killenure.com, from 0876402664 or 06271498.
