Local Fine Gael TD Tom Hayes has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney TD, that payments under the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme began issuing from Wednesday, September 26. It is expected that approximately €154 million will be paid out.
“These payments are arriving just at the right time for farmers who have had a rough summer financially. Around 74,000 farmers will benefit from this first round of payments and the Department will continue to process cases so I expect the final number receiving payments to be significantly higher.
“The Minister has also confirmed that out of those 74,000 farmers, 3,750 of them will receive payments after successfully applying for derogation from the revised stocking density requirements. This demonstrates the Minister’s commitment to farmers who could show that their inability to reach the revised stocking level was due to circumstances outside of their control.
“The Minister has also established an Appeals Committee, chaired by Mr. Padraig Gibbons, to allow for the timely and independent review of the Department’s decisions on these derogation applications for those who are not satisfied with the outcome of their case.
“Overall I hope this news will be the start of a more rewarding period for the farming industry in Ireland. After a number of tough months the industry deserves as much support and assistance that we can provide” Tom Hayes said.
