St. Michaels AFC celebrated an amazing year of achievements at an awards dinner dance at Ballykisteen Hotel last weekend.
Chairman Ray Lonergan welcomed every one to the banquet with a table full of silverware gleaming behind him before President Mick Flynn made his speech with pride and passion.
“This is a fantastic night of celebration for our club,” said President Mick Flynn. “We have players and committee members here tonight who have been part of our history for decades.”
As the meal progressed awards and speeches continued to honour the great commitment, hard work and long-standing members and players of the club.
In a remarkable year the team won the FAI Junior Cup, the TSDL League Cup, the Munster Junior Cup and the Tipperary Cup Final. All the panel of St. Michaels AFC received crystal presented on behalf of the St. Michael’s AFC committee along with managers Jason Purcell and Steward Fitzgerald.
Players Paul Breen and Jimmy Carr received a presentation on behalf of the St. Michael’s AFC committee for their heroics with the Republic of Ireland Junior squad. Quadrangular cup winners with Rep. of Ireland Junior squad, Club Captain James Walsh was captain, Paul Breen was top goal scorer and Chris Higgins played excellently in defense.
As the dinner progressed many speeches and more awards followed including a large plaque from the TSDL presented to the St. Michael’s committee congratulating the club for the achievements during 2013/2014 and a presentation award from the Munster Football Association to St. Michael’s Club for their achievements.
Davy Hassett, Ian Foley and Sandra Flynn presented long standing committee members Thomas Finnan, Jimmy Tobin, Eddie (Farmer) Jones, Jamesie O’Reilly and Raymond Lonergan with crystal as to their long serving years on the committee and the wives of Jason Purcell and Stewart Fitzgerald, Pauline and Mary, were presented a bouquet of flowers.
Sandra Flynn made a speech leading up to prestigious St. Michaels Hall of Fame Award named after the late Colm Whelan. Club President Mick Flynn presented the award to Tommy Lewis who was humbled as always.
In January 2014, St. Michaels AFC was awarded the Annerville Soccer Award in Clonmel and in February, Paul Breen won the Junior International Player of the Year Award from FAI in Dublin. In December 2013, Paul Breen, James Walsh, and Chris Higgins won the local award at the Canon Hayes Sports Awards and Mick Flynn Club President was nominated for outstanding service for St. Michaels.
“This was a fantastic night of celebration, dancing and meeting up with old friends,” said PRO Sandra Flynn.
