COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL
Congatulations to Thomas MacDonaghs and Moyle Rovers on qualifying for the county senior football final. Thomas MacDonaghs reached their first final by surprising favourites Clonmel Commericals in their semi-final on Saturday and Moyle Rovers defeated Arravale Rovers in the other semi-final. The county senior football will be played at Leahy Park Cashel on Sunday, November 6 at 2.30pm. It will be preceded by the County Minor B football final between Ballyporeen and Kildangan.
Congratulations to Aherlow on winning their first County Intermediate Hurling title on Saturday last when they defeated Gortnahoe Glengoole in the final at Golden by 1-11 to 0-10. Aherlow won the Junior A title in 2009 so it’s a great achievement to be Intermediate champions only 2 years later. Of course, they won the county senior football title in 2010 so it’s been a great 3 years for the club. Hard luck to Gortnahoe Glengoole on losing the final for the second year in a row but there is no doubt they will persevere and return to the victory podium soon. They still have the Mid final to play against Clonakenny. Well done also to the Golden club for hosting the final and to referee Johnny Ryan and his officials. Aherlow will play the winners of Dunhill (Waterford) and Effin (Limerick) in the Munster Club Intermediate semi-final on November 6.
MUNSTER CLUB HURLING
Good luck to Drom and Inch for their Munster Club hurling championship quarter final against Ballygunner of Waterford on Sunday next, October 30 at Semple Stadium at 2pm. Extra time will be played in the event of a draw. Colm Lyons of Cork will be the referee.
COUNTY JUNIOR A FOOTBALL
Congratulations to Kildangan on winning their second junior A football county title. They bridged a 21 year gap to register a 1-13 to 1-6 win over Ballylooby Castelgrace at Boherlahan on Saturday. Kildangan will play Glin or Sean Finns of Limerick in the Munster Club Junior Football quarter-final on November 6 at a Tipperary venue.
COUNTY MINOR A FOOTBALL
The county minor A football final between Clonmel Commercials and Golden Kilfeacle will be played at Cahir on Sunday next at 1.30pm. Commericals are defending champions and Golden Kilfeacle are seeking their first title at this grade.
Congratulations to Tipperary’s four All Stars – Paul Curran, Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher and Larry Corbett. Paul Curran won his second consecutive All-Star award at full-back joining legendary full-backs such as Pat Hartigan (Limerick), Martin O’Doherty (Cork), Leonard Enright (Limerick), Eugene Coughlan (Offaly), Conor Hayes (Galway), Noel Sheehy (Tipperary), Brian Lohan (Clare) and Diarmuid O’Sullivan (Cork) who have secured consecutive All-Star awards in the number 3 position. Interestingly, Tipperary defenders have now won the full-back All Star hurling award in 4 of the last 5 seasons (Declan Fanning 2007, Padraic Maher 2009 and Paul Curran 2010 and 2011). Noel Hickey (Kilkenny) in 2008 is the other player to win an All-Star full-back award during this period. This is also the first year that 3 players from the same Tipperary club won awards with Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher and Larry Corbett all from Thurles Sarsfields. Larry Corbett becomes the fifth Tipperary player to win awards in 3 consecutive years joining Francis Loughnane (71-73), Nicky English (83-85 and 87-89), Michael Cleary (4 in a row, 90-93) and Eoin Kelly (04-06). Padraic Maher won his second award and it was Michael Cahill’s first. Tipperary have won 83 All Stars since the current awards were first introduced in 1971 – 81 hurling and 2 football (Declan Browne in 1998 and 2003). There were 7 years in which Tipperary won no hurling All Star – 1974, 76,77,81,82,95 and 98.
