On Tuesday 15th November, Tipperary People and Places lecture welcomes Alice McDermott to The Source, Thurles to tell the story of four Tipperary nurses who served in World War 1.
The four ladies are - Molly O'Connell Bianconi - awarded Military Medal for bravery under fire; Venice Hackett-died of Spanish Influenza, contracted from soldiers she was nursing, four weeks before war ended; Dorothie Feilding (Moore) – awarded, in order, Belgian Order of Leopold 11, French Croix de Guerre, first woman to receive Great War British Military Medal for bravery; and Kathleen Murphy- hard-working, multi-functioning Great War VAD. Alice will explain their contribution and that of the many other nurses as front ambulance drivers, mechanics, nurses during the conflict in an "ominous hazardous environment".
