Christmas cheer was all around in Cahir, last Saturday, as the town gathered to see the new Christmas lights switched on!

Cahir Youth Choir sang Christmas carols and chocolates were passed around before the beautiful Christmas lights were officially turned on, at a ceremony in the Square.

Cahir Credit Union Manager Claire Whelan representing one of the main sponsors of the new Christmas lights actually flipped the switch but also present at the festive event were representatives of the other main sponsors and organisers - Cahir Development Association’s Chairman Billy Coffey and Financial Controller Nellie Williams, Sean Duggan of Cahir Credit Union and Promoting Cahir Group Chairman Patrick O’Donovan.

During the speeches other sponsors such as Cahir Bingo, Cahir Tidy Towns and the loyal traders of Cahir were thanked and collaborations between local groups was highlighted as the way forward for the town of Cahir.

It is hoped this will be just phase one of a three-phase Christmas lights project.

To buy these lights, put them up and fit the necessary infrastructure to carry the new lighting system costs €44,000. Without the support of Tipperary County Council and the other generous sponsors the project would not have been possible.

The Christmas Lights Committee will hold a collection day for donations towards the new Christmas lights this Saturday, December 17, in Dolans Supervalu, from 10am to 6pm. There will be a raffle for a beautiful hamper on the day.

Many people have commented on how well the lights look and have expressed a wish to donate a little something towards them. So Supervalu has generously offered their premises as a place to collect any such kind donations. Let's all support the wonderful work of local people and businesses who are making Cahir a wonderful place to live!
