Bravery award for Tipperary gardaí who tackled man with loaded gun

Two Tipperary gardaí will be rewarded for their exceptional bravery in the line of duty, today, when they are awarded Scott Medals.

The two gardaí wrestled with a man with a loaded shotgun.

Gardaí Deborah Marsh and Gerard Brassil were on duty at Newport Garda Station on the evening of January 20, 2012, when they were called to an incident at Lackamore, Newport.

In the course of the incident that followed several shots were fired at the two gardaí from a shotgun and a rifle. As a result of the actions of the gardaí the shots were fired through the roof of a vehilce and through a windscreen.

Sadly they were unable to prevent the man turning a rifle on himself and discharging a fatal shot.

Garda Marsh and Garda Brassil are being awarded Scott Medals for showing “exceptional courage and bravery, invovling personal risk to life in the execution of duty.”

The medals will be awarded at a ceremony in Templemore today, Friday, December 8.
