Clonmel High School will host a Careers Expo 2018 on Friday, 27th April with Tipperary senior hurling manager Michael Ryan and All-Ireland winning captain of 2016, Brendan Maher, making guest appearances.

The Careers Expo event, which will be held in the school's sports hall from 3pm to 5pm, is designed to give students in Clonmel guidance on how to identify the most suitable career; how to pursue their chosen career and provide an insight into the daily reality of what life is like working in that environment.

Senior students from all Clonmel secondary schools have been invited to attend.

“It is a new departure for the school and we just felt students needed to be given a practical and realistic view of what it is like to be working on a daily basis in as many different areas as possible”, said Anthony Reynolds, Clonmel High School vice principal.

One of the main aims of the Careers Expo is to provide an opportunity for students to engage in an informal setting with people working in various professions throughout Tipperary.

“Companies have been very supportive of the event and are making staff available on the day to talk to the students, which is greatly appreciated”, said Mr.Reynolds.

He said such a format would allow students to learn first-hand from staff representatives on how they pursued their career, what educational pathway they took and what it was like to work in a specific area every day.

“The organising committee would like to thank all those who have volunteered to come and share their knowledge and experience with our young people.

“This event will give students a practical insight into the reality of work in an area they are interested in” said Mr.Reynolds.

He said the event would complement the career research students were doing through attending university open days.

“Anything the school can do to help students select the right university course and career for them is crucial, given the alarmingly high drop-out rate there is in first year in college.

“The intention is for this event to be of practical help to students and put them in touch with the reality of their chosen career”, said the High School vice principal.

Among the companies that will be represented at the Careers Expo are MSD, Dundon Logistics, Boston Scientific, Albapharma, Kennedy Motors, Mulcahy Construction, An Garda Siochana, the Army, the HSE, Eir, Bank of Ireland, The Nationalist, AIB, Abbott Vascular, Clonmel Waste Disposal, Phoenix Gym,Tipperary ETB, Vision ID and Teagasc.
