Fine Gael has announced the addition of  Mary Newman  to the party ticket  in the Tipperary constituency.

The Fine Gael Executive Council met  on Wednesday evening and agreed on the addition of a candidate in Tipperary for the next General Election.

"Mary Newman has been added to the Fine Gael ticket in the Tipperary constituency and will be running for election alongside Garret Ahearn, who was selected at the recent Fine Gael selection convention.

Mary Newman is a qualified vet and currently works for a large multinational company" went the FG statement.Ms Newman, a mother of four, is a resident of the Lagganstown area near Golden and unsuccessfully contested a Seanad by-election earlier this year.

There had been strong speculation this week that sitting county county councillor Mary Hanna Hourigan  would be added to the ticket but the FG executive council has opted for Mary Newman, a sister of  FG TD Kate O Connell.

Mary Newman was  among the candidates  seeking nomination at the party convention last March when  she came fourth in the first count at the convention.

Garret Ahearn, son of former TD Theresa Ahearn, was  selected by Tipperary Fine Gael as their General Election candidate and now Mary Newman has been added to the ticket.

At the convention Garret Ahearn beat  six other candidates at a mammoth selection convention

He topped the poll on the first count and got over the line on the fifth count.

The voting after the first count was

Garret Ahearn 143

Michael Fitzgerald 112

Michael Murphy 108

Mary Newman 97

Mary Hanna Hourigan 92

Noel Coonan 79

Shelagh Marshall 22.

By the final count, May Newman's vote had increased to come second to Garret Ahearn.
