Carrick-on-Suir man is elected chairman of Comeragh Municipal District

Cllr Ray Murphy from Carrick-on-Suir.

A Carrick-on-Suir born Fianna Fail councillor has been elected the new chairman of Waterford Co. Council's Comeragh Municipal District.

Cllr Ray Murphy, a native of Carrickbeg, was elected Chairman of the Comeragh District that covers a large swathe of Carrick-on-Suir's Co. Waterford hinterland at the agm last week.

The Portlaw based councillor was proposed for the office by Cllr John O'Leary and seconded by Cllr Liam Brazil.

Cllr Murphy, who was co-opted onto Waterford Co. Council two years ago, told the agm it was a great privilege to be elected to the highest office in Comeragh District.

He cited the scourge of illegal dumping as a continuing challenge for the Council as it was for all councils and said he had constantly advocated the use of CCTV and CCTV signage as a deterrent.

"Though I fully support educational programmes as a method of reducing offenders,  I believe that some will continue to flaunt the law unless there is a deterent .

He commended the work of the Council's Environment Department in tackling dumping and littering and hope that the next year would bring them  significantly closer to a cleaner Comeragh District.

Cllr Murphy also criticised the Local Electoral Area boundary report that has recommended reducing the Comeragh Municipal District from a six seater to a five seater.

"As you may be aware the commission ruled to reduce the number of seats in this constituency from six to five. As a councillor  who conducts monthly advice clinics, I know first  hand how difficult it is to navigate this vast constituency, I am disappointed that apparently no heed was taken of mine and other submissions made supporting the retention of six seats in this constituency. This committee has decimated this constituency by effectively increasing the workload for each councillor by a further 20%," he added.

Cllr Murphy is son of Allie and Patsy Murphy, who live at Castle Court in Carrickbeg.

His dad Patsy was a well known Fianna Fail councillor who served on Carrick-on-Suir Town Council for many years.
