Tipperary a stronghold for Barn Owls - Has you seen any of these wise guys about?

A iconic species - the Barn Owl!

Did you know that Tipperary is one of three counties which are considered the stronghold of the Barn Owl, an iconic species in Ireland

The Tipperary Branch of BirdWatch Ireland is looking for your records of Barn Owls. The branch received funding from the Heritage Council of Ireland to commence a nest box scheme for Barn Owls.

The Barn Owl is an iconic bird of the Irish Countryside.

Our Barn Owl population is estimated at approximately 300-400 breeding pairs. Tipperary is one of three counties which are considered the stronghold of this species. Unfortunately, with the demise of old barns and old trees with suitable cavities Barn Owls are struggling to find suitable nest sites.

Our project is aiming to record as many sightings of Barn Owls in the county and to commence a nest box scheme for Barn Owls. If you have any Barn Owl sightings we would love to hear them.

Alternatively, if you are in a position to host a Barn Owl box on your property we would like to hear from you too.
