Fr. John McGrath P.P. blessing the new area waterworks scheme when it was officially opened.
Fr. John McGrath goes to Rosegreen.
Speculation had been rife for some time in the parish of Mullinahone and surrounds. We knew that Fr. McGrath would be leaving us though we continued to hope that he would not.
Last weekend it became official that Fr. McGrath was leaving. He was being transferred by the Archbishop to Rosegreen which is part of the parish of Cashel.
Many of us had hoped that Fr. McGrath who came to us in September 1992 as Parish Priest would be allowed to stay with us as associate pastor like his predecessor; Canon Nash remained with us when Fr. McGrath came. It was not to be as in the 26 years since then priests have become scarce and men like John McGrath have become scarcer still. We know that he will be missed, but we also know that our loss will be Rosegreen’s gain.
Some knew that going back to his student days Fr. McGrath had a great love of building since his time in England. His last big task in Mullinahone was to oversee the repairs to the roof of St. Michael’s Church. That task is almost done.
It is rumoured that a similar task awaits Fr. John in his new appointment. If so, it is one he will relish. We’ll remember him best as a visitor to our sick. He loved to help to put children on the right path to reception of the sacraments. He loved ceremony and visitors to our parish told us of how lucky we were to have him. We know, as we also know that Fr. John McGrath was the most human of men in his dealings with the people of the parish. We shall miss him deeply, but we wish him happy ministry in Rosegreen.
We welcome his replacement Fr. O’Gorman who comes to us from Moyglass/Killenaule. He has big shoes to fill, but like the old saying says “God is Good” Changes are to come into force on August 18th.
