A heart-warming tribute written by his 13 year-old grandchild has earned Michael Boland from Elm Park, Clonmel, the title of Tipperary Grandparent of the Year.

Michael won the county category of the national competition, organised by Cadbury Roses and Friends of the Elderly, when his granddaughter Shauna Power from Chestnut Avenue, Ard na Sidhe, Cashel Road, Clonmel, submitted the following entry-

“I think my granddad should win grandparent of the year because he is the bravest person I know and he is an inspiration to me. In October last year he was diagnosed with cancer. He had to undergo a very serious operation and months of intensive treatment.

He had to spend 9 months away from his home and family. He has been so brave through the whole ordeal and that’s why he’s my inspiration. Any time I have small worries, I think of my granddad and what he has been through and how courageous he is.”

All the county winners received a Cadbury Roses Hamper and a $200 voucher courtesy of the Irish Professional Photographers Association.

Commenting at the announcement of the winners Shane Guest, Kraft Foods Ireland said “It’s wonderful to see the great relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren. We hope that this competition encourages grandchildren, young and old, all over Ireland to spend more time with their grandparents”.
