Sr. Alphonsus Walshe who died on December 20th 2012 was a highly esteemed member of the Presentation Convent, Clonmel where she had been a dedicated and revered teacher for many years. As morning dawned on Thursday, December 20th, Sr. Alphonsus winged her way to Heaven peacefully, silently without even a sigh or a murmur. It was the end of an era.

Aged 88, Sr. Alphonsus was a native of Butlerstown, Co. Waterford one of eleven children, ten of whom predeceased her. She was a greatly loved by her family, her community and by all those students whose lives she touched.

On September 12th 1944 Sr. Alphonsus left her native Waterford and entered the Presentation Convent, Clonmel where she spent a very happy and prayerful life as a teacher of English, Mathematics, verse speaking, Choral Work and Religious Education in the Secondary School. Winning many “cups” with her debating teams, she engendered in her pupils a great love for the English Language and for Shakespearean drama and poetry.

Being spiritual director of the Legion of Mary she instilled in her group a great love for Mary, our Mother, and inspired in them a desire to imitate and follow her in their individual lives. Her love for the Blessed Sacrament was deep and profound and was an inspiration to all of us.

We hold you close within our hearts

And there you shall remain

To walk with us through out our lives

Until we meet again

So rest in peace dear loved one

And thanks for all you’ve done

We prey the God has given you

The crown you’ve truly won.

Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas siorai di agus leaba imeasc na Naomh uile.
