Beaufort, Co Kerry was the venue for this year’s Munster Master Cross Country Championships.
In the Men’s race Mark Gleeson (Nenagh Olympic) led the County athletes home when finishing 10th overall in what was the most competitive Master competition in years with a record entry. Mark won the over 45 title very impressively with Tom Blackburn (Moore Abbey Milers) winning the Bronze. Derek Nolan (Clonmel) won the over 50 Silver medal. There were also good performances from Paudie O’Keeffe (Clonmel), Patrick Roche (Carrick on Suir), James Ryan, John Shanahan, Donal Keane and Michael Moore (all Dundrum) as well as Paddy Doyle (Moyne).
In the Master Ladies race Moyne athletes were to the fore with Imelda Flynn running very well when winning the over 60 title impressively. The Moyne over 45 Ladies also performed very well when winning both the Inter Club and Inter County Bronze medals and they were led home impressively by Frances Long 28th with good performances from Liz Power 50th and Eileen Ryan 53rd. Other Moyne athlete that ran well included Bridget Gleeson 39th, Breda McNamara 42nd and Catherine Dunne 49th.
Cashel is the venue this Sunday for the County Junior and Senior Cross Country Championships. Once again we are indebted to Michael Ryan for the use of his lands and facilities and to the Dundrum Club who are hosting these Championships. This new course is about 1Km from the Esso Petrol Station as you leave Cashel on the old Cork Dublin road, near the Rock and the course is just over a mile per lap.
This is also the venue for the Munster Junior and Senior Cross Country Championships which will take place on January 12, 2014. The programme is Junior Ladies 3K at 12 noon, three athletes to count on a team, Junior Men 6K, three to count on a team, Senior Women 6k, three to count on a team and Senior Men 10K, four to count on a team. Junior eligibility is that athletes must be Over 16 and Under 20 on the 31st of December in the Competition Year.
These Championships are usually very competitive especially the Senior Women and Men while in recent years we have had poor support for the Junior Championships, hopefully this might change this year.
