Local angler Willie Boles Snr from Golden ended a 20 year wait last Saturday by landing his very first blue shark.
He was on an organised annual fishing trip in the small town of Union Hall in west Cork with a group of friends and family.
On other occasions several factors had worked against the group, such as poor weather conditions and wrong water temperature but on this trip it all came together.
The skipper on the day was confident there were shark about, however, things were beginning to look like it might be another missed chance when by 3.30pm there was no sign of the elusive fish.
After a quick consultation it was decided to give it till 4pm and right on the stroke of full time Willie saw the balloon indicate that he had a bite and a battle ensued - 25 mins and two tired arms later the 90llb shark was finally in the boat.
Unfazed by the event Willie even managed to receive a phone call from the shore just as the shark was about to be landed to the bemusement of every other angler on the boat.
Congratulations and well done and here’s hoping it is the first of many.
