In glorious sunshine, in the beautiful surroundings of St Anne’s Tennis Club, Waterford, Larkspur’s Grade 2 team of Sinead Dunne, Ursula Ryan, Gareth McGlinchey and Moss Ahern were victorious in a very tough Winter League Munster Semi Final against St Anne’s.
Gareth lost his singles with Sinead winning her singles and Ursula and Moss won their mixed doubles. It was all to play for in the ladies and men’s double with Larkspur only needing to win one of the two doubles. They were both very tense matches and eventually Sinead and Ursula won their ladies double in a tie-break in the third set. Gareth and Moss lost their doubles also in a very close third set.
The Munster Winter League Finals will be held in Nenagh and Puckane Tennis Clubs on Saturday, April 6. The schedule of play will be as follows: Grades 2, 3 and 5 will play first round matches at 11.30am with second round matches at 2.30pm. Grades 1, 4 and 6 will play first round matches at 1pm, second round matches at 4pm. Super doubles, if necessary, as courts become free.
The presentation of prizes will take place at the end of play and there will be a barbecue, live music and a disco in the clubhouse afterwards. It will be a very enjoyable day and if anybody is interested in going please let Barbara Ryan or Benny Dudley know.
The veteran’s tennis tournament took place in Castleview from Friday, March 22, with finals on Sunday, March 24. Rosemary Maher and Gerardine Maher took part in the vintage ladies doubles. Ursula Ryan and Benny Dudley, Catherine Fitzell and Jimmy Ryan and Barbara Ryan and Bernard all took part in the veterans mixed doubles. Ursula and Benny were narrowly beaten in the final in a championship tie-breaker. Paul Anglim and Geraldine Everett were beaten in the final of the over 35 mixed doubles. Paul Anglim and Benny Dudley won the veterans mens doubles. Well done to all who took part and thanks to Castleview for the usual warm welcome our Club receives.
All our members will be delighted to know that the work in the Park is almost coming to an end. It is hoped that all courts will be up and running on April 1 and it is very exciting to see the progress that has been made so far. There is a slight delay with the floodlights and they will be fully installed and operational as soon as possible.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Finally, on Sunday, March 17, Larkspur Park welcomed Pope Francis to take pride of place on our float in the St Patrick’s Day parade in Cashel. On the float there were nuns, priests, female priests, a cardinal, Mother Teresa, famous tennis players and even Ming Flanagan singing Ave Maria and doing the Harlem Shake and dancing to Gangnam Style. The idea to enter a float came from one of our junior members Sophie O’Meara. It was great fun and a big thank you goes out to all those who helped in any way. All the tremendous hard work paid off as we won first prize against very stiff competition.
