The Garda Siochana Boxing Club is holding an event to honour the achievements of Sergeant Dick Hearns (1907-1993).
Sgt. Hearns retired from An Garda Siochana in 1964 as physical fitness instructor leaving a personal and life lasting impression on all that were lucky to have met him.
Dick, a native of Ballina, Co. Mayo, was a soldier, a Guard, an athlete, an inter county footballer and manager and successful soccer coach at club and international level.
He was one of the top boxers in the world. He was a loving father and grandfather. To those that knew him he was a gentleman and a legend. His list of achievements are extraordinary and far too numerous to mention here.
The Garda Boxing Club wish to ensure the legacy of Dick Hearns is remembered well into the future.
At 7.30 pm this Friday, September 13 in the Sports Hall of the Garda College, Templemore, the club is hosting the first of an annual Boxing Tournament with the “Dick Hearns Boxing Club,” Ballina, competing for the Inaugural “Coiste Siamsa Dick Hearns trophy.”
Coiste Siamsa the body responsible for the development of sports within the Gardai, are delighted to be associated with Dick Hearns, arguably the greatest ever Garda Sportsman, as his list of achievements show.
