WILDERNESS ROVERS 4 ST. MICHAEL’S 3
Wilderness Rovers came from two goals down to pull off a surprise victory in this Premier League thriller against St. Michael’s in the Wilderness, Clonmel last Sunday.
St. Michael’s were hoping to get back to winning ways after conceding the TSDL Premier League title the previous Wednesday to arch-rivals Clonmel Town. They looked to have things under control as they opened up a 2-0 lead with a Michael Maguire header after 18 minutes, followed by a volley from 15 yards by Danny O’Brien in the 23rd minute.
Wilderness Rovers, playing their last game of the season had nothing to play for but pride and saw a Seanie O’Hara shot come back off a post after 28 minutes, but they reduced the deficit after 35 minutes when Keith Cashman was quickest to react to a rebound from a Michael O’Hara shot that came back off the crossbar to leave it 2-1 in favour of St. Michael’s at the break.
Rovers have shown that they are capable of competing with the best at this level and they hit a purple patch midway through the second half. They restored parity after 70 minutes when Brendan Dempsey scored directly from a corner kick after the Saints ‘keeper did well to push a Jason Barnes free-kick onto a post.
At the other end Brendan Dempsey got back to clear off the goal-line after 74 minutes before a Jason Barnes direct free-kick low into the corner of the net after 77 minutes put Rovers in front after 77 minutes.
St. Michael’s, with players battling for places for this Sunday’s FAI Junior Cup showpiece in Cork, got back on level terms 6 minutes from the end minutes when Michael Maguire scored his second of the afternoon. But Rovers grabbed all three points on the stroke of full-time when a Stephen Hennessy screamer from 20 yards through a crowd of players rattled the back of the net.
