The world awaits Clonmel student and transplant recipient Andrew Duncan to make his mark, as he prepares to compete in the 19th World Transplant Games.
Andrew, from Powerstown in Clonmel who has just completed his junior certificate, received a kidney transplant just last year from his donor father Malcolm. Andrew will compete in the 15-17 age category in the World Games which take place from July 28 - August 4 this year which in Durban, South Africa.
He will be one of 24 athletes on the Irish team, all of whom have received organ transplants including kidney, pancreas, liver, and heart. Seven of the kidney recipients received their transplant from living donors. The team, ranging in age from 12 to 68, will participate in various sporting disciplines.
The much revered former Ireland international and premiership footballer, Niall Quinn, gave a motivational talk to a group of brave transplant athletes recently in advance of their departure next month. Taking time out of his busy schedule, the popular TV pundit and successful entrepreneur spoke to members of Transplant Team Ireland when they gathered for training at the ALSAA sports complex near Dublin airport.
