Tipperary girls battle hard at All-Ireland finals

Rockwell girls with Irish Sevens stars Louise Galvin and Chloe Blackmore.

Rockwell College senior sevens rugby team reached the All-Ireland finals for a third year in a row in Dublin recently.

Rockwell’s day got off to a good start with a convincing win over Tuam, Co. Galway, by eight tries to two. Kate Barlow dazzled the opposition with her side step and scored three tries.

Rockwell’s next pool match opponents came from Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. Rockwell got off to a slow start, falling behind in the first half after slipping off some tackles which led to tries.  In the second half, a determined side led by hard working captain Claire Bennett pulled back the scoreline to three tries apiece. A knock on by Rockwell in the last play on the Enniskillen tryline led to a scrum which resulted in a breakaway try for the Ulster side. The final scoreline was four tries to three against Rockwell.

The Rockwell girls were devastated and knew they had a hard task for their last pool game against last year's champions Gorey from Wexford. The game was a fiercely contested battle, with superb footwork from Andrea Stock, Ellie O’Sullivan and Faye Dowling opening up the Gorey defence. Rockwell deservedly went on to win by four tries to three.

Rockwell then  had to wait an anxious half an hour to see whether they had qualified for the semi-finals. In the end they lost out on overall score difference to Gorey who went through instead and went on to win the final.

More Tipperary sport.
