Tipperary Town Ladies beat Lattin-Cullen Ladies on penalties after a thrilling encounter in Cullen for the Roger O Dwyer Memorial Shield.
These two new sides served up a fantastic game of football, treating the big crowd to a very exciting game. The home side started this game very well and played some good football to leave the ladies from Tipp Town wondering what had hit them. Cullen took a 3-0 lead in the first half hour with the third goal an exceptional effort from Carol Leahy cutting through the Tipp team before shooting brilliantly to the bottom corner of the Tipp net. That finally sparked the visitors into life and for the final ten minutes of the first half they had their best period of the game having plenty efforts on goal and making the breakthrough through Bianca Ryan leaving the score 3-1 at half time.
Cullen again started quicker in the second half scoring to make it 4-1, but from this point on the visitors settled and found their best form. For the rest of the game the Tipp team dominated and managed to pull the score back to 4-4, even looking likely to go on and get the winner, but when the final whistle came its was only fitting that this game ended level as both teams had put so much into it. Penalties it was and with the magnificent Susan Adderly-Quinn in goal Tipp were always going to be favorites. After some great saves from both keepers and great goals from both teams it all came down to young Lauren Martin from 12 yards but there was no need to worry as the confident youngster smashed the ball into the top corner for a 3-1 win on spot kicks.
Both teams had some great players on show and everyone contributed to what was a great game. Marguerite Morrissey, Rachel Condon and Chloe O Brien were all big players for the home side on the day. With the visitors getting big games from the likes of Fiona Gilsenan, Bianca Ryan, Stephanie Walsh and Susan Adderly-Quinn. All in all this was a magnificent match and an even better occasion and anyone at the game must have been amazed that two teams with this kind of ability and skill only came into existence last year. With this year under their belts I have a feeling that the carpenters in both Tipp and Cullen will be busy men building cabinets to house the trophies that these talented ladies will no doubt be winning over the coming years.
